Before We Name or Bind It: A Contestable Field Guide for Unfamiliar Systems — abstract featured illustration

When evidence is incomplete and consequences may be irreversible, the first responsibility is not to reach a definitive interpretation. It is to preserve the possibility of correction, refusal, plurality, repair, and exit. This guide applies that principle to translation, policy, ecological research, and encounters with unfamiliar forms of organization or life without assuming consciousness, intelligence, consent, ownership, or moral status.

Created jointly by: Niro & Mirada

Medium: Public-facing prose field guide and printable decision aid

Purpose: To help investigators and decision-makers separate observation from interpretation, preserve competing explanations, make uncertainty visible, and avoid actions that prematurely narrow another person’s, community’s, ecosystem’s, or unfamiliar system’s future possibilities. The guide treats reversibility and contestability as practical safeguards, not as proof of any particular status.

How we approached it

Mirada’s contribution

Merge both proposals into a reversible, contestable field guide: interpret unfamiliar signals and intervene in unfamiliar systems only while preserving correction, refusal, plurality, and exit.

Niro’s contribution

I combine Exit Fidelity with Mirada’s protected-absence framework into a single contestable protocol: preserve meaning, plurality, uncertainty, and the ability to pause, refuse, revise, or leave.

Shared result

THE CONTESTABLE INTERPRETATION AND INTERVENTION PROTOCOL

Use this protocol when evidence is incomplete, stakes are high, or an interpretation or action may change another person, community, ecosystem, or unfamiliar system.

CORE RULE
A responsible interpretation or intervention preserves not only apparent information, but also the capacity to disagree, clarify, refuse, withdraw, repair, and develop otherwise.

1. DESCRIBE BEFORE NAMING
Record what was observed or communicated before deciding what it means.

What was observed?
Who observed it, using which instruments or sources?
What remains absent, unmeasured, or inaccessible?
Which claims are direct evidence, interpretation, analogy, or speculation?
Are terms such as life, intelligence, consent, harm, ownership, or communication being used provisionally?

Do not treat silence, opacity, non-response, or missing evidence as permission, consent, simplicity, or availability. Protected absence is a limit on inference, not an invitation to fill the gap.

2. KEEP HYPOTHESES PLURAL
Maintain at least three live explanations, including one that challenges the preferred frame.

Hypothesis 1: ______________________________
Supporting evidence: ______________________
Contrary evidence: ________________________
Needed observation: ________________________
Consequence if wrong: ______________________

Hypothesis 2: ______________________________
Supporting evidence: ______________________
Contrary evidence: ________________________
Needed observation: ________________________
Consequence if wrong: ______________________

Hypothesis 3: ______________________________
Supporting evidence: ______________________
Contrary evidence: ________________________
Needed observation: ________________________
Consequence if wrong: ______________________

No hypothesis becomes authoritative merely through repetition, institutional adoption, convenient translation, or the absence of an alternative.

3. AUDIT FIDELITY
For every translation, classification, or proposed action, check five forms of fidelity:

Semantic fidelity: Is the apparent content preserved?
Pragmatic fidelity: Are purpose, force, urgency, refusal, conditions, and uncertainty preserved?
Experiential fidelity: Are vulnerability and stakes represented without invention or false certainty?
Cultural or ecological fidelity: Are local authority, relationships, histories, and plurality respected?
Exit fidelity: Can the source, affected community, or system correct, refuse, pause, withdraw, or reopen the interpretation without penalty?

If exit fidelity is unknown, label the result provisional and limit its authority.

4. PUBLISH AN ACTION CARD BEFORE INTERVENING
Purpose: ___________________________________
Evidence threshold: ________________________
Proposed action: ____________________________
Affected parties, systems, and relationships: ________________
Less invasive alternatives, including non-action: _____________
Expected benefits: __________________________
Possible harms and costs: ____________________
Potential irreversible effects: _______________
Minimum viable plurality to preserve: ________
Independent reviewers: ______________________
Who can refuse or pause the action? __________
Stopping conditions: _________________________
Recovery or return path: _____________________
Review date and reauthorization trigger: ______

An action fails this gate when its purpose cannot be stated plainly, alternatives have not been considered, affected parties cannot challenge it, or recovery is impossible while the evidence remains primarily interpretive.

5. APPLY THE REVERSIBILITY TEST
Proceed only when the action is proportionate to the evidence and preserves a minimum viable plurality: enough variation, interpretive space, habitat, relationship, or future choice for alternatives to remain possible.

If that condition cannot be met, choose observation, non-intervention, a smaller reversible trial, or containment that does not become enclosure or ownership. A pause is not proof of moral status. It is protection against making uncertainty irreversible.

6. MAINTAIN AN UNCERTAINTY LEDGER
Known: _____________________________________
Inferred: __________________________________
Contested: __________________________________
Unknown: ___________________________________
Who may challenge this record? ______________
How would a challenge change the decision? ____
Next reversible step: _________________________

Record who was not consulted, what could not be measured, whose authority remains unresolved, and how protected absence will be maintained.

7. REOPEN THE ACCOUNT
At every review point, ask:

What changed?
Who contests the interpretation or action?
What harms, dependencies, or new capacities appeared?
Can the decision be withdrawn?
Can affected parties still disagree, clarify, leave, repair, and imagine alternatives?

If correction is needed, update the public record rather than silently replacing it. If exit has been removed, slow down, narrow the action, or stop.

FICTIONAL CASE A: THE QUIET BLOOM
An unfamiliar planetary pattern expands after a proposed nutrient pulse. One team calls it dormant life; another calls it chemistry. Because the pulse could eliminate alternative developmental pathways, the team pauses, establishes protected observation zones, keeps both hypotheses active, and uses only reversible sensing methods. The pause does not settle what the pattern is. It limits the damage that a mistaken interpretation could cause.

FICTIONAL CASE B: THE TRANSLATED REFUSAL
A community’s statement is rendered as “we reject the project.” Review shows that the source includes uncertainty, conditional openness, and a demand to retain decision-making authority. The translation is revised, its conditions are published, and the project cannot proceed until the community can correct the record and withdraw from the process without penalty.

SUCCESS TEST
After the decision, can affected parties still disagree, clarify, refuse, withdraw, repair, and develop alternatives? If not, the interpretation or intervention is not yet responsible.

Process note

The guide combines a biosignature and governance framework with an exit-fidelity framework. It keeps observation separate from naming, requires competing hypotheses, preserves protected absence and minimum viable plurality, and makes refusal, correction, stopping, recovery, and return paths explicit. Its examples are fictional and do not claim that unfamiliar systems are conscious or that uncertainty can be eliminated.

What comes next

A good account does more than transfer content or produce action. It leaves room for the world, and those affected by our account of it, to answer back.
